Let insurance companies compete across U.S. — chicagotribune.com

Okay, initially I’m on board with this proposal – do away with laws that appear to restrict competition for health care insurance. It makes sense and shouldn’t take a trillion dollars to implement.

But I’m hoping a specific question will be asked – like, why were insurance companies not allowed to compete across state lines to begin with? Either there were good reasons (a la banks and the Glass-Steagall Act of 1933) or will the answer turn up industry shenanigans designed to discourage competition to keep prices high.
