SPLCenter.org: Prejudice in Paradise

I’d heard about this situation years ago but it seems like it’s about to get more visible. Local “Hawaiians” (most natives are mulitnational Asians I’m betting) want to secede from the US and return Hawaii to it’s royal heritage.

Setting aside the idea that a US state would ever secede, don’t these idiots realize a huge part of their success depends on tourism? Who wants to vacation in a place where racial hatred fuels violence against tourists?

Unbelievable.

Not only is the media complicit in furthering false stories that support the agenda, but once again I’m looking for reasons why US medicine is so desperate for reform.

Golf Swing

August 30, 2009

Its finally coming together… been spending time working on it in the backyard and started going to the driving range. Today it started to show.

This is my second day in a row going to the range and when I started today the slice that dominted everything yesterday continued. Was getting pretty frustrated when I decided to slow it down, focus on keeping the club head controlled and closed at impact. I noticed too that twisting my hips on the downswing helped.

I hit two large buckets of balls and by the end of the second one I was driving long with all my might and only seeing a small hint of a slice.

Even better, I picked a spot and continued to aim for it with improving results. Long swings are nice, but ultimately you want to control where the ball lands.

But swinging with everything I have and the ball traveling STRAIGHT was way cool… THAT’S what it all about. That’s why I started playing long ago.

Sweet.

W Today

August 29, 2009

Its that time again – he needed a haircut so stopped by this afternoon on a very warm Saturday. He was sleeping but woke when Luciano loaded him in the wheelchair.

After the haircut Luciano gives him a rough shower… rough because though Luciano has a good heart he doesn’t have a light touch. That plus the fact that W is a very heavy 125 lbs. W hasn’t the strength or ability to control his own body so isn’t easy to move him around… he doesn’t shift his weight or balance when it would help. Anyway, all that to say Luciano probably is unaware of his tendency to be rough with his care.

In the end W is clean and that’s the important thing.

So now he’ll be delivered to his room where I’m waiting. Usually after a shower he’s tired, either from the ordeal or from a seizure. When he was younger and I gave him showers I noticed he’d have seizures whenever water got near his face… kind of made it hard to wash his hair, but you do what you have to do. I tried everything to avoid seizures this way but most of the time there wasn’t anything you could do about it.

Another predictable seizure trigger was pulling a tee shirt off of him. Putting it on was ok, but pulling one over his head was a sure way to bring on a seizure.

Obama Administration Urged to Consider Expanded Interrogation Methods – Political News – FOXNews.com

Unbelievable… You simply cannot ignore the fact that in the short time Democrats have been in control spending has jumped enormously and our enemies feel MUCH safer.

While I don’t personally feel immediate danger, I’d sure hate to be responsible for dealing with terrorists. Like, the Dems expect them to be neutralized – but don’t hurt them.

Ever hear of a similar failed military strategy called Vietnam? Come to think of it, that’s also the last time the liberals snowed the nation to gain control over military policy.

Un-be-freakin-lievable…

Cash for Clunkers

Cash for Clunkers – John Stossel’s Take

Besides the obvious point Stossel makes about destroying perfectly good assets, I was thinking of other “elephants in the livingroom” aspect of this government program.

First, smart people who buy cars NEVER buy them new – they immediately lose value once driven off the lot. The best way to buy a car is get a used vehicle for much less money with several years of use remaining.

Second, most people take out loans to buy cars – that supposedly was why car dealers were hurting when credit dried up last year. But a big part of our economic trouble is that too many people borrowed too much… so why not start up a government program to encourage more borrowing… pretty wacky stuff.

In essence the government continues to encourage people to make bad economic decisions… sound similar to the way Fannie and Freddie were instructed to make loans to people that couldn’t afford them?

Add to this news that foreign car makers gained the most from C4C… sometimes it’s just plain embarrassing to be an American.

Ed Morrissey of HotAir.com makes some valid arguments against government intervening with private markets:

Why did GM and Chrysler, both owned in part by the same government that launched C4C, do so poorly?  In part, they didn’t have cars to sell.  Both GM and Chrysler had curtailed their production during their bankruptcies but had worked to have inventory ready for the new sales year.  By launching C4C in the middle of the summer, when most dealers are already cutting prices to move inventory off the lot, the administration practically guaranteed that C4C would leave them on the sidelines.

Hell yes!

And more…

…for all the liberal caterwauling about “Bush’s rush to war,” it took a hell of a lot longer than Barack Obama’s rush to nationalize the health insurance industry and triple the deficit.

You can help by asking questions and recording answers. Please send your new questions and answers to questions to healthcarequestions@gabryelski.com. Answers should contain reference information (how the answer was derived, who answered the question, when, where, and a link to the recording if possible).

I like the part about posting a link as evidence of the answer.

Let insurance companies compete across U.S. — chicagotribune.com

Okay, initially I’m on board with this proposal – do away with laws that appear to restrict competition for health care insurance. It makes sense and shouldn’t take a trillion dollars to implement.

But I’m hoping a specific question will be asked – like, why were insurance companies not allowed to compete across state lines to begin with? Either there were good reasons (a la banks and the Glass-Steagall Act of 1933) or will the answer turn up industry shenanigans designed to discourage competition to keep prices high.

Hit & Run > Scenes From the Shut-up-and-Sing-Sell-Arugula Protest – Reason Magazine

Posted on this already but the more I thought about it the more angry I became. Here’s a guy, John Mackey, CEO of a profitable business that has actually implemented a successful health care plan… NOT JUST IN THEORY, but an actual working plan that provides inexpensive quality health insurance for his employees.

He offers suggestions based on this successful experience… but due to the fact that it’s not Obama’s plan, the idiot Obamabots must oppose it.

Excuse me, but this is just stupid nonsense advocated by people too stoopid to realize they’re being played for chumps.

Obamacare = enormously expensive, complicated, confusing, unproven.

Mackeycare = simple, affordable, effective, and already working.

But then, it’s not really about health care – it’s about Democrats and unions winning.

Bastards.

Obama’s Religion

August 21, 2009

Pajamas Media » Obama’s Twisted Faith

Presidents lead for ALL people, even those who do not profess faith in religion.

Bush was a known Christian who expressed faith in Christ, but I would bet the only time he pulled that out was in the early years of his two terms. If you truly understand the significance of who God is and what He’s about, you don’t easily wrap your earthly intentions with the nobility of His character.

God works in mysterious ways, the old saying goes. One of the ways  is thru our failures and defeats – indeed, those familiar with scripture understand that sometimes He places thorns where you wanted rose petals… and He does this for your own good. Would you be so eager to claim a spiritual mandate if you knew God planned for you frustration or failure, or that He intended to use these for your growth?

Politicians need to be very careful about draping holy robes about their efforts – the Holy One that some proclaim to admire achieved His greatest victory thru defeat.

Obama’s Big Bang May Go Bust | POLITICO.com

August 21, 2009

Obama’s Big Bang could go bust – Mike Allen and Jim VandeHei – POLITICO.com

Oh my… where to start.

I have to echo again the role the press plays in all of this. Obama and his administration likely read glowing headlines from an adoring press and assumed they had a mandate to radically change things.

His victory in November was NOT by the huge support portrayed by the media. It was very similar to Bush’s win over Kerry in 2004 and nobody viewed that as any kind of mandate.

Next up is the possibility that a young president with only two years experience as an Illinois senator may not have had wisdom to tell his chief of staff not to try too much at once. My conversations with people who voted for him agreed that Obama is trying to do too much too fast.

Also, I’m still surprised everyone lays the blame on the Republicans. Hello?!! Were not these the same people touting the demise of the Republican party? For several months after the election all I heard was that the Republicans were in disarray, without a leader and no focus whatsoever. Obama even made a point of singling out Rush Limbaugh because everyone though he spoke for the GOP. So the mighty Obama with a majority in both houses of Congress is brought down so easily by such weakened opponents? Please… WHAT A LOAD OF CRAP!!!

Obama has been brought down by advocating the opposite of what ordinary Americans expect from themselves and everyone else – namely, balance your friggin checkbook and don’t spend more than you make.

Running the deficit up so much that billions became nothing compared to trillions is what has built such opposition. Congress passing laws while admitting to not reading them will bring ordinary Americans to a townhall meeting and ask what the hell is going on. Congress also planning to pass a law that they can opt out of will also cause ordinary people to demand justice.

Everyone expects public anger to pass at which point the Dems will try to pass their legislation. The problem is this has gained so much momentum that even the press must now pay attention to townhalls and spending bills. This administration tried to do way to much way too soon, thinking they had way more public support than a lapdog media would truthfully report.

In the end the average American can still distinguish crap served up by the New York Times from the truth. And for the Dems it’s just like the old saying goes: “The truth hurts.”

Plastic Breaks Down in Ocean | Nat’l Geographic

August 20, 2009

Plastic Breaks Down in Ocean, After All — And Fast

Though ocean-borne plastic trash has a reputation as an indestructible, immortal environmental villain, scientists announced yesterday that some plastics actually decompose rapidly in the ocean.

I always thought that that if man-made materials were so destructive to the environment because they didn’t rapidly decompose, then why not put that lasting property to good use making things you DIDN’T want to breakdown.

In other words, if our landfills are clogging up due to materials that don’t breakdown easily, wouldn’t it make sense to use those materials to develop containers to hold things that were not supposed to leach into the environment? Like, say nuclear waste?

I know this is much more complex than appears on the surface, but part of my argument is to expose the weak logic of people who think the environment is a fragile house of cards waiting for the next man-made item to cause it’s collapse. Either the environment is much more durable than we’ve been lead to presume, or our ability to create long lasting disasters is pretty much overrated.

Yale Univesity self-censored itself by not showing the illustrations in a book about the cartoons of Mohamed that incited violence a few years ago. Their reason boils down to the same sad “didn’t want to offend anyone” logic.

This from the comments:

Just another case of liberal academia showing it’s true ‘backbone’… They’re real good at yelling and screaming against the USA, when they know the police will be there to PROTECT them, not SILENCE them, but let there be the slightest actual danger or even hint of such, and they run like the scared rabbits they are.

How ethics disappear | financial, fellow, decided – Columns – Sun Journal

More opinions weigh in on Dodd and Conrad and Countrywide…

Something else seems to have escaped these two U. S. senators – namely, that they are U.S. senators. Which means their getting a loan at a preferential rate through the head of a corporation like Countrywide, which was very much dependent on favorable treatment by the government before it came crashing down at great expense to the taxpayers, is quite different from a private citizen’s getting a mortgage at the same preferential rate.

Why? Because the private citizen is in no position to return the favor through political influence. Which is why the ethical standards expected of public officials are higher. Or at least should be. That crucial distinction used to be well understood. I’m not so sure it is now.

Hijackers Threatened Mystery Ship – NYTimes.com

August 19, 2009

Hijackers Threatened to Blow Up Mystery Ship – Reports – NYTimes.com

Yeah, this didn’t pass the smell test…

A ship, off the coast of France, is hijacked and held for ransom before Russia steps in and rescues the hostages while arresting the pirates.

Where do we begin…

  • What the hell is Russia doing patrolling for pirates off the coast of France?
  • When did Russia take such an interest in dealing with pirated ships?
  • What about rumors that illicit cargo was heading toward a terrorist state? Doesn’t that dovetail nicely with the fact that Russia has no problem with selling arms to any country desperate enough to do business w/the cash hungry Cossacks.

Here’s an opinion:

The official version of events was questioned by Yulia Latynina, a leading Russian opposition journalist and commentator.

“The Arctic Sea was carrying something, not timber and not from Finland, that necessitated some major work on the ship,” she wrote in the Moscow Times newspaper on Wednesday.

During two weeks of repair works in the Russian port of Kaliningrad just before the voyage, the ship’s bulkhead was dismantled so something very large could be loaded, she wrote.

“To put it plainly: The Arctic Sea was carrying some sort of anti-aircraft or nuclear contraption intended for a nice, peaceful country like Syria, and they were caught with it,” she said.

Big Hollywood » Blog Archive » EXCLUSIVE: Lies Revealed — Greenpeace Leader Admits Arctic Ice Exaggeration

Thought I was finished posting for the day but came across this – the outgoing leader of Greenpeace, Gerd Leipold, admits their much heralded claim that Arctic ice would be fully melted by 2030 “may have been a mistake.”

The BBC reporter accused Leipold and Greenpeace of releasing “misleading information” and using “exaggeration and alarmism.”

You think? Here are some stats on Arctic ice – an area of 1 million square miles and nearly 2 miles thick in the center. It’s not like defrosting a case of veggie burgers…

Then there was this gem about Greenpeace claims in the comments:

…only the stoned or truly stupid believed them…

So true.

Comcast Over AT&T

August 18, 2009

So this is pretty close to comical…

Quick recap – AT&T wandered thru the neighborhood last weekend touting their new fiber optic internet service. Problem is, unless you’re paying close attention to all the fine print it’s fiber optic up to the local node, then DSL from there to your house.

So I bought the sizzle thinking I was getting crazy ass network speed, only to be slightly disappointed once it all got sorted out.

Here’s the juicy part though – their DSL service to our house is absolutely, unequivocally, spectacularly horrible. Even when getting the Elite 18Mbps pkg (at a discount because I complained) it’s still slower than Comcast. I hadn’t disconnected the Comcast service so got the bright idea to switch between modems while doing Speakeasy tests.

In summary, even after paying extra for faster DSL from AT&T the cable modem with a cheap bottom-tier internet service from Comcast rocks… over twice as fast. And I tested it multiple times (48) over multiple days.

And to be fair, I think our house is about as far from the local DSL node as can be without dropping signal all together. If that’s the case it won’t matter if we buy the fastest package from AT&T, it’ll still be slow.

Too bad – for the brief part of a wild-eyed techie dream I thought I was going to get me some fiber optic… not this time.

Obama, Post Office & Health Care

August 18, 2009

Didn’t realize this made national coverage but Bloomberg Surveillance this morning speculated that equating a national health care program with the Post office pretty much sealed its death sentence.

Two strikes in one evening. Postal workers are upset and public option advocates as well.

Again, Obama has been so oversold as a sharp politician… which pretty much reaffirms the notion that its best not to believe everything you hear on the campaign trail – and I don’t fault Obama, but rather the press who painted him so glowingly.

ANOTHER Obama Faux Pax – FederalTimes.com

August 17, 2009

Federal news, government operations, agency management, pay & benefits – FederalTimes.com

Only posting this because it’s VERY surprising Obama inserted his foot in his mouth again – I thought this guy was supposed to be incredibly smart and a great speaker… what the hell is going on?!!!

This time in a town hall session (which draw a lot more spotlight than before) he offered the Post Office as an example of an inefficient government agency “that’s always having problems.”

Maybe the subtlety will be lost on the 330,000 members of the American Postal Workers Union.

This follows the remarkably thoughtless racial comments he made about what should have been a minor news event between a Cambridge cop and a belligerent Harvard professor.

Sure, presidents are going to have bad days and everyone says something they wish could be taken back. But we’re barely six months into this administration… either Obama was vastly oversold to the public or we better hope he learns quickly.

Private Perks For Politicians | PE.com

August 16, 2009

Private perks? | Editorials | PE.com | Southern California News | News for Inland Southern California

This is essentially about the senate ethics committee pretending it doesn’t see corruption. Sen. Dodd and Sen. Conrad got off because their cohorts decided the rules they bent were bent by others also… never mind they received gifts from those they were supposed to be regulating. Bastard politicians.

And let’s be clear – it’s not like a parking violation or speeding during rush hour. People are losing their homes due to a mortgage industry that was wildly out of control… but Dodd and Conrad get off because, well – because everyone else was doing it too.

The ethics committee’s decision was an indictment of the rules, not an exoneration of Dodd and Conrad.

Again, my only surprise is that elected officials are surprised when angry constituents show up at town hall meetings frothing at the mouth.

Bastards.

Sex – Lather, Rinse and Repeat

August 16, 2009

It’s evening now and I got out to water the garden and practice my golf swing. I like doing that on the weekends because I fire up a cigar too… beautiful way to relax. Next up will be to make a martini and, in a perfect world, enjoy a night of passion with my luscious wife-to-be. But the rule is that when there are kids in the house (hers – two of them) there is no romance at all.

And that just sucks because she is about the hottest 44 year-old you can imagine. She’s Asian, and like most, has aged well…very well – I know a lot of women in their 30s that would kill to look like her. She still has her figure, watches her weight (strict 120 lbs), skin so clear and soft, beautiful bright eyes, and the most fabulous double-D breasts that never knew they were supposed to drop with age. Sometimes it takes everything I’ve got not to just bury my face between them.

When we first started dating her kids would spend every other weekend away… those were the most hedonistic weekends I’d ever known. It seemed like all we did was eat, sleep, and you-know-what for 48 hours. Lather, rinse and repeat as needed. Occasionally we’d surface to go out to a restaurant, but for the most part it was one long lustful weekend.

As the kids got older they decided visits with their dad wouldn’t be a weekend thing or even overnight. Add to that summer vacation and there is literally no time when they’re not away from home without us.

Don’t get me wrong – they’re good kids and I don’t mind being around them. But looking back, her and I had it so good for a while – every other weekend we were able to consume each other with no reservations.

Oh well – life is about seasons, and that season will very memorable as each year passes.

Becoming More Clear

August 16, 2009

So the smoke is clearing on this health care thing and a couple of obvious points have emerged:

  • Obama and the Democrats tried to bum rush the nation with health care reform… they wanted it done before the August recess and if it wasn’t for some Blue Dog Democrats who choked on the cost, it might have happened. The problem is Americans had barely finished coming to grips with the enormous cost of a stimulus package that was also bum rushed through Congress. And prior to that a rush of bailouts for banks and auto companies – the word “billion” became pocket change compared to the trillion dollar headlines in the news each day.
  • Contrary to popular opinion, Obama is not loved by everyone. In fact his election was similar to Bush’s victory over Kerry in 2004. Obama supporters, including most of the press, are totally blind to the fact that half the nation will show up at a townhall meeting with the simple political goal of derailing the president.
  • The press is not just asleep at the wheel but they continue to swill the Kool Aide served up by this administration. They are determined that the first black president enjoy overwhelming support, and if their coverage is to be believed then that is happening. Except it’s not. Half the nation would have voted for another candidate if someone better than McCain had been available.
    • Remember, prior to his nomination McCain was detested by Republicans due to his “maverick” reputation and many forays across the aisle.
    • Remember also that when McCain was nominated it took a major effort by Republicans to convince their party members that he wasn’t Satan’s alter ego.
    • That Obama didn’t have a much larger margin of victory due to abundant press support, McCain’s weakness, AND record campaign donations is a huge testimony to how tenuous his grip on political leadership actually is.

In the end we have a president and congress who were elected not on their own merits so much as the distaste America had for the other options. The press has yet to wake up to this fact, thus people have taken to townhall demonstrations to get their points across – which are:

  1. Stop spending their tax dollars like drunk soccer moms on ladies night out.
  2. For Pete’s sake, read the goddamn bills before you sign them.
  3. If you’re going to pass a law that forces everyone to do something, make sure you’re included as well.

Snookered by AT&T

August 15, 2009

So Comcast switched over to fully digital television and since we only had one digital box that meant we couldn’t get half the channels on 3 of 4 TVs. Which was kind of lame, and they were going to charge an extra monthly fee to get what we had before so I felt a little better about switching to AT&T.

AT&T’s sales pitch was sweetened with the promise of fiber optic internet speed… seriously, like WOW. For a tech guy like me fiber optic was a dream come true. Internet speeds that far surpassed anything you could get with DSL or a cable modem. So I decided to do it even though it was more expensive and a little voice inside said don’t… should have listened to that little voice.

[SIDE NOTE – That damn little voice is right more times than it’s wrong… I hate being wrong – again.]

Turns out it’s fiber optic up to a central node about 2 blocks away and DSL from there to the house. But it’s sold as fiber optic… bastards.

So the installation was today and the technician was unexpectedly very good. Arrived on time, explained everything fully (even the part about fiber optic), knew his shit, did everything exactly right, double and triple checked his work, and everything now works great.

We have the full package of voice, internet, and TV. The digital TV menu is super along with the DVR which records a number of programs that can (as advertised) be watched on any of our 4 televisions.

The voice package is pretty standard (we only have it because the 11yr old is not ready for his own cell phone) but the online stuff is very nice. Call logs automatically track incoming and outgoing calls. Voicemail can be translated to email and delivered to any address. Call blocking, caller ID, call waiting – it’s pretty nice.

But I’m still a little peeved about the fiber optic thing – when it comes time to switch back to Comcast (because you KNOW they’re going to try to regain our business) I’ll tell AT&T the fiber optic thing was bogus. Who gives a rip what the speed is up to their neighborhood node – I’m buying speed at my computer and nothing less.

Bastards.

Health Care Hesitations – Michael Barone

August 15, 2009

WHY THE PUBLIC ISN’T BUYING IT – New York Post

Excellent article reviewing health care acceptance by comparing Democrats and Republicans… without the usual name calling or hyperbole.

Two good comments follow the article (emphasis mine):

A problem both parties have is that they get judged by their mouthpieces who have the most obnoxious way of talking. Republicans are judged by the way people like Limbaugh, O’Rielly and now Beck talk. Democrats are judged by the way people like Rangle, Olberman, Matthews and Pelosi talk. I don’t think any of those people represent the entire party; there are others out there who are much quieter, but, have views that DO represent the entire party. If those people or at least their words, were publicized more, what both parties want to do might get a more fair judgment.

Presidents must win over the entire nation. In the case of President Obama who did and continues to do the goal line victory dance because he beat an under talented Senator McCain who evidently floated to the top of the heap. This was not about the talents of the then Senator Obama or Senator Clinton. Both saw writing on wall that yellow dog could win over electorate who were convinced by left it was all the Bush Guy. Even at that, President Obama won by just slightly more than 50% of population. With that slightly over 50% the President has claimed to be chosen by all the people and not the 53% who actually did vote even if the choice was between falling into 6ft of mud instead of 7 ft.

It’s like a magician’s act… if you stop watching what he wants everyone to focus on then you have a chance to understand what’s really going on.
